LEADING BY EXAMPLE: A NEW NATIONAL MOVEMENT FOR VOLUNTARY BLOOD DONATION
📰 Featured Story
Securing Maternal and Child Healthcare in Tanzania, Africa and the Global Community
A defining moment unfolded in Dar es Salaam as Mr. Oscar Kissanga, Chief Executive Officer of the Tanzania National Chamber of Commerce (TNCC), joined senior leaders and key stakeholders in the symbolic unveiling of the Executive Blood Drive Programme—marking the official launch of a new national humanitarian initiative by Africa Initiative Development Foundation (AIDF Tanzania).
The moment was simple, yet deeply significant: leaders came together to unveil a new commitment to saving lives.
The Executive Blood Drive Programme is designed to take voluntary blood donation beyond individual campaigns and transform it into a leadership-driven national movement—connecting CEOs, senior government officials, diplomats, business leaders, chambers of commerce, development partners and other institutional leaders across Tanzania.
Its ambition is clear:
To reach all 26 regions of Tanzania, bring senior leadership closer to humanitarian action, and inspire leaders to lead by example by donating blood and mobilizing others to do the same.
The initiative is rooted in a fundamental principle: safe blood is a public health necessity, and protecting access to blood is a shared responsibility.
Blood transfusion is essential in responding to complications during pregnancy and childbirth, severe anemia among children, trauma, surgery and other life-threatening conditions. Strengthening voluntary blood donation is therefore not only a health intervention—it is an investment in maternal and child health, emergency preparedness, health-system resilience and the right to life.
FROM COMMITMENT TO ACTION
The launch was not only symbolic. It immediately translated leadership commitment into measurable humanitarian action.
On the day of the historic launch, 50 units of blood were successfully collected from leaders who attended the Executive Blood Drive, demonstrating the power of leading by example.
More than 270 invited participants took part in the historic programme launch, bringing together senior leaders, institutional representatives, business stakeholders, diplomatic communities and other partners around a shared humanitarian purpose.
50 units.
270+ participants.
One powerful message: leadership can save lives.
These numbers represent more than statistics. They are an early demonstration of what becomes possible when leaders use their influence to mobilise communities, inspire voluntary action and place public health at the centre of collective responsibility.
A CALL TO LEADERSHIP
During the launch, Mr. Oscar Kissanga, Chief Executive Officer of TNCC, issued a powerful call for collective leadership and partnership.
He called upon leaders, Ambassadors, and TNCC regional leadership across all 26 regions of Tanzania to extend their cooperation and support towards the initiative, helping create a stronger national culture of voluntary blood donation.
The call was not simply directed towards institutions.
It was a call to leadership itself.
A call for leaders across Tanzania to step forward, participate, mobilise their networks and demonstrate that saving lives can become part of the culture of responsible leadership.
This call represents something larger than one event.
It is an invitation to leaders across Tanzania to ask:
What can I do to save a life?
Who can I inspire to act?
And what legacy can leadership leave behind?
AIDF Tanzania believes that lasting social change begins when leadership moves beyond statements and becomes visible action.
FROM DAR ES SALAAM TO THE NATION
The Executive Blood Drive Programme represents the beginning of a broader national journey.
From Dar es Salaam to communities across Tanzania, AIDF Tanzania seeks to build a platform where leadership, business, diplomacy, civil society and communities converge around one humanitarian purpose: saving lives.
The vision is to establish a model that can be replicated across Tanzania—bringing senior leaders closer to communities, strengthening voluntary blood donation, expanding public awareness and encouraging a new generation of citizens to see blood donation as an essential act of civic responsibility.
This is how a local initiative can become a national movement.
And this is how national action can contribute to a broader African and global development agenda.
ADVANCING SDG 3
At its core, the Executive Blood Drive Programme contributes to Sustainable Development Goal 3 – Good Health and Well-being, particularly the broader global commitment to strengthening health systems, protecting maternal and child health and ensuring that communities can access essential health services.
For AIDF Tanzania, advancing SDG 3 means translating global development commitments into practical, community-centered action.
It means connecting international development priorities with the realities faced by families, mothers, children and communities.
It means transforming solidarity into service.
And it means building partnerships capable of moving from awareness to action, and from action to sustainable impact.
A GLOBAL-LOCAL PARTNERSHIP FOR LIFE
The participation of senior leaders, diplomatic communities, business institutions and diverse stakeholders demonstrates a powerful truth:
Humanitarian responsibility has no borders.
Different institutions.
Different professions.
Different regions.
Different nations.
One shared responsibility: Protecting life.
The Executive Blood Drive Programme therefore seeks to position leadership not only as a voice for change, but as a force for practical humanitarian action.
It creates a platform through which Tanzania's leadership, private sector, diplomatic community, civil society and communities can work together around a shared public-health priority.
A MOMENT THAT SHOULD BECOME A MOVEMENT
The unveiling of the Executive Blood Drive Programme was more than the opening of a programme.
It was the beginning of a leadership movement.
A movement calling upon those with influence to use that influence for public good.
A movement encouraging leader to lead by example.
A movement seeking to make voluntary blood donation a stronger part of Tanzania's culture of civic responsibility.
A movement connecting Tanzania's regions, institutions and communities around a common humanitarian purpose.
And a movement with an ambition that reaches beyond Tanzania—to contribute to a broader African and global conversation on maternal and child health, humanitarian leadership, voluntary blood donation and community-driven solutions.
The journey from Dar es Salaam to all 26 regions of Tanzania will require sustained partnership, leadership and collective action.
AIDF Tanzania welcomes leaders, diplomatic missions, chambers of commerce, private-sector institutions, development partners, civil society organisations and communities to join this journey.
Because the success of a national movement is never measured only by the people who start it.
It is measured by the people who choose to carry it forward.
