LEADERSHIP IN ACTION. PARTNERSHIP FOR LIFE. 📰 Featured Story

Strengthening Voluntary Blood Donation Through Leadership, Community Action and Strategic Partnership

Dar es Salaam, Tanzania | Sabasaba 2026

Every health system depends not only on institutions and infrastructure, but also on people who are willing to contribute to the systems that save lives.

At the 50th Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair (Sabasaba 2026), the National Blood Transfusion Services – Eastern Zone (NBTS EZ) pavilion provided an important platform for public engagement around one of the most fundamental acts of community solidarity: voluntary blood donation.

During a visit to the pavilion, Prof. Tumaini Nagu, Deputy Permanent Secretary responsible for Health, President’s Office – Regional Administration and Local Government (PO-RALG/TAMISEMI), engaged with Joel Emanuel Temba, Chief Executive Officer of Africa Initiative Development Foundation (AIDF) Tanzania and Safe Blood Ambassador – Eastern Zone, together with the leadership of Rotary Sunset Club Dar es Salaam, which organised the two-day voluntary blood donation campaign.

The engagement brought together leadership, civil society and community actors around a shared public-health priority: strengthening a culture of voluntary blood donation and ensuring that communities understand their role in saving lives.

WHEN LEADERSHIP MEETS COMMUNITY ACTION

The presence of senior public leadership at a community-facing blood donation platform reflects the importance of connecting national health priorities with the people and partnerships that help translate them into action.

During the engagement, Prof. Nagu recognised the contribution of voluntary blood donors and encouraged Tanzanians to embrace blood donation as a sustained culture of service.

For AIDF Tanzania, such moments reinforce a principle at the heart of our work:

Community participation is not separate from health-system strengthening. It is part of it.

Every voluntary donor represents a person choosing to contribute to the well-being of another human being—often someone they may never meet.

That is the power of community solidarity.

FROM A DONATION TO A LIFESAVING SYSTEM

Blood cannot be manufactured. It must be voluntarily given.

That reality makes public awareness, donor mobilisation and sustained community participation essential components of efforts to maintain an adequate and safe blood supply.

The role of organisations such as AIDF Tanzania is therefore not simply to organise campaigns.

It is to help build understanding, strengthen community participation, connect people with appropriate health institutions and contribute to a culture in which voluntary blood donation becomes part of responsible citizenship.

Through the AIDF CARE Program, AIDF continues to support community-centred health initiatives and partnerships that promote lifesaving action and strengthen public awareness around health priorities.

PARTNERSHIP THAT MOVES IMPACT FORWARD

The engagement at Sabasaba also demonstrated the value of partnerships that bring different strengths together.

Government leadership.
Health institutions.
Civil society.
Community organisations.
Voluntary blood donors.

Each has a role to play.

When these actors work together, a public-health message can become community action—and community action can contribute to stronger health outcomes.

This is the spirit of SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being, and of SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals.

ONE ACT OF SERVICE. A SHARED RESPONSIBILITY.

Voluntary blood donation reminds us that some of the most powerful contributions to society begin with a simple decision:

to give.

A unit of blood may become part of an emergency response, a maternal health intervention, care for a child, treatment for a patient undergoing surgery, or support for someone whose life depends on timely transfusion.

The donor may never know the person whose life was touched by that decision.

But the impact remains.

BUILDING A CULTURE OF VOLUNTARY BLOOD DONATION

AIDF Tanzania believes that sustainable health impact requires more than periodic campaigns.

It requires a culture.

A culture in which young people understand the importance of blood donation.

A culture in which communities participate consistently.

A culture in which institutions collaborate around public-health priorities.

And a culture in which giving blood is recognised as an expression of solidarity and shared responsibility.

The engagement at Sabasaba was therefore more than a moment of recognition.

It was a reminder of what becomes possible when leadership, institutions and communities move in the same direction.

FROM SABASABA TO A HEALTHIER TANZANIA

AIDF Tanzania remains committed to strengthening partnerships that place communities at the centre of development and transform public participation into meaningful health impact.

Because saving lives is not the responsibility of one institution.

It is a shared responsibility.

And sometimes, that responsibility begins with something as simple—and as powerful—as choosing to donate blood.
