WHEN A CITY MADE ROOM FOR EVERY CHILD

AIDF Tanzania and FunCity Bring Together More Than 2,000 Children from Registered Care Centres in Dar es Salaam
On 7 February 2026, something rare happened in Dar es Salaam.
More than 2,000 children living in government-registered care centres, including orphans and children with special needs, were brought together in one shared space at FunCity Kigamboni—alongside caregivers, volunteers, partners, professionals and members of the wider community.
It was more than a day of recreation.
It was a statement about belonging.
Through the collaboration between African Initiative Development Foundation (AIDF) Tanzania and FunCity, the A Day with Orphans initiative created a space where children who are too often separated by circumstance could meet, play, express themselves, discover their talents and experience something every child deserves: the feeling of being seen.
For many of these children, opportunities to gather at this scale are not easy to create. Their circumstances, the structure of residential care, mobility challenges and the realities facing care institutions can create invisible boundaries between them and the wider community.
For one day, those boundaries were deliberately brought down.
The gathering brought together children from more than 30 government-registered centres across Dar es Salaam, with an estimated 10,000 people participating throughout the event.
Beyond celebration, the programme created access to health screening, psychosocial support, talent and recreational activities, community engagement and a voluntary blood donation initiative—connecting humanitarian action with dignity, inclusion and public health.
But perhaps the most important outcome could not be measured in numbers.
A child does need to be protected.
A child needs to know that they belong.
They need spaces where disability is not a reason for exclusion, where being an orphan does not mean being forgotten, and where care extends beyond the walls of an institution.
That is the deeper meaning behind A Day with Orphans.
It was not simply about bringing children to FunCity.
It was about bringing society closer to the children.
AIDF believes that community development is not only about building systems, providing services or responding to emergencies. It is also about creating the conditions in which every person—regardless of circumstance—can participate, contribute and be celebrated.
The event therefore stands as part of AIDF's broader commitment to serving as a voice of the community, a bridge across society and a platform for inclusive humanitarian action in Tanzania and Africa.
Because sometimes change does not begin with a policy.
Sometimes it begins when a community decides that no child should have to feel invisible.
Community Voice. Change Starts Here.
